POST ADOPTION SERVICE IN THE BALEARIC ISLANDS

What do we aim to do?

It is a well-known-fact by the Balearic Islands citizens that international adoptions have substantially increased in our Community during the last ten years in which one thousand children from more than 20 countries have been adopted. Everyone can imagine the difficulties which have to overcome those parents who start the adoption process, but only those who are successful know that, the same day this process finishes, another one, which might also be troublesome, begins: the post-adoption process.

Adoption experience studies warns us about the possible failures if the process is not cared. All kids bring their previous experiences, which have to be assumed by the adoptive families. Often, the families have to deal with special situations as a result of the parental abandonment or the institutional confinement they have gone through.

Despite of the troubles that may arise during the first years in the new family, the biggest index of adoption failure happens during the puberty and adolescence, when problems concerning ethnical and self-identity construction and the interest for the origins and biological links arise. In our Community, this phenomenon is just beggining, and it will increasingly grow because the rise of adoptions began more than a decade ago. Therefore, it is the right moment to act.

With this purpose, FODESBA (Promotion of Economic and Social Development of Balearic Islands) has set up the POST ADOPTION SERVICE IN THE BALEARIC ISLANDS, with the aim of informing, counseling and training the adoptive parents and the adopted individuals in order to overcome the problems regarding the adopted or adoptive condition.

We are very grateful for the collaboration to AIBA and their warm reception of this iniciative as well as the infrastructure and experience offering to start this Service. In the same way, we gratefully thank the Ministry of Employement and Training of the Government of the Balearic Islands because of the co-funding of SOIB and the European Social Fund, which allows us to hire professional experts in the subject to manage the Service.
